Handkerchief Wedding Dresses

Being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is such a joy.  If you want to learn more about my church go here.  In my calling I get to work in the Young Women’s program.  These beautiful young ladies are so strong and faithful and such great examples to all of the world.

It was so neat to go to the Women’s General Broadcast this last weekend and hear the inspired messages from the leaders of the church.  Temples were a big part of the theme of the evening and it is also a big topic we teach about in the Young Womens.  It reminded me of these handkerchief wedding dresses I made for my Laurel class.

I recently taught a lesson to the girls about making a decision now to be married in the temple when they get married and to live their lives worthily to go to the temple someday.  I thought that it would be special to make each of the young women a keepsake for their wedding day.  I first saw this idea here.  These wedding dresses made out of  handkerchiefs were so appropriate because when the young woman chooses to go to the temple she can take the handkerchief with her.  Until that day she can hang it in her bedroom to remind her of the goal she has set for herself.

Here are a few instructions for making these beautiful little dresses.

You can purchase the white handkerchiefs from Seagull Book, or Deseret Book or Amazon.  Sometimes Wal-Mart also carries them. The handkerchiefs that are a little stiffer work best.  Fold the handkerchief like a fan and use an elastic around one end to hold it tight.

I created the top of the dress with the white glitter paper.  It did look awesome but it was a little difficult to use just as a warning.  Nothing would stick to it so I had to hot glue everything down.

I tied a white ribbon around the top of the dress and the handkerchief to hold them together.

The delicate lace and gems were purchased at Hobby Lobby.  They are all stickers.  I had never seen ribbon stickers before but they have them and they worked awesome. The little diamond ring on the saying was also a sticker from Hobby Lobby.

I folded the hangers out of wire because I couldn’t find the hangers but I have since seen them at JoAnn’s and Hobby Lobby.

My daughter still has hers hanging in her room and I love that she has this as a reminder of her goal to be married in the temple someday.
