So last night I made homemade flour tortillas. I have to say that there are few things better than fresh, warm tortillas! They are super easy to make so I figured I’d post it here to let everyone else take a shot at making them too! ๐
First you are going to need 3 cups of flour in a medium size bowl…
Then you are going to add one teaspoon of salt…
Next add 1/3 cup of vegetable oil…Some people swear by lard, but I didn’t have any lard on me. Okay, that’s a lie. I totally have lard on me, but we are talking about tortillas not my backside!
Lastly we are going to add 1 cup of warm water…
Easy peasy, right? Now we are going to stir this up until it forms a ball in the bowl…
About this point I start heating my tortilla skillet…if you don’t have a special one to warm tortillas, any non stick pan will do! So now I floured my counter and put my dough on the counter. I kneaded it a few times to make sure it was all one pretty ball. ๐
At this point you are going to pinch off a 1 to 2 inch chunk to roll out. I made mine fairly thin because we were making burritos. If you are going to use them to eat by themselves (which is delicious, but I suggest adding butter or butter and cinnamon/sugar mixture because it’s a little piece of heaven!) then I would suggest a bigger chunk so they can be thicker.
Awww…what a cute little dough ball! Anyway, now you get to roll this bad boy out! ๐ There is something wrong with me that it’s physically impossible for me to roll a tortilla out in a circle. They always come out in a rectangle or kind of the shape of a catcher’s mitt. I’ve tried the “roll, quarter turn, roll, quarter turn, etc…but it never works for me. Weird, right? For picture’s sake, I took extra time on this one to make sure it was MOSTLY round. ๐
Now we are going to toss it on the skillet. I found that I have plenty of time to roll out the next tortilla while the current one is warming.
Pretty awesome! You want to make sure your skillet is at a medium heat…too low and it will take you FOR.EV.ER. to cook. Too hot and it will burn and stick, which is no fun for anyone. Can you see those little bubbles…that means you can flip it!
Oh yeah! That’s what we like to see! Didn’t think you could do it, did ya? Well you totally can! Don’t over cook your tortillas. They shouldn’t be crunchy, unless you like it that way. They should be warm and chewy, but NOT doughy. Fill them with your choice of whatever and enjoy!!
We filled ours will salsa simmered carnitas! YUMMY! So this recipe made me about 8 tortillas and our tortillas were just a little larger than fajita size. So play with the recipe, there are lots of different ones out there…find one you love and go for it! My next adventure will be homemade corn tortillas! WOOHOO! ๐
