Who Goes To RootsTech?
If you have ever wondered about your genealogy or family history, then RootsTech is for you! A lot of people think it’s just for hardcore genealogists, but they have something for everyone! From beginners all the way up to genealogy experts, you will learn something new every year! While it may seem a little overwhelming to get started with family history, this is a great place to begin.
What is RootsTech?
RootsTech Conference is a genealogy conference hosted by FamilySearch in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is the world’s largest family history conference. It’s held at the Salt Palace convention center and has a ton of speakers, classes, vendors, and more! It will be held on March 6-8, 2025. You can register here for this year’s genealogical conference!

Who will be the RootsTech Keynote Speakers?
RootsTech has already announced the first round of speakers who will keynote at this year’s event! Here they are!
Ndaba Mandela – Grandson of Nelson Mandela, he is also a renowned speaker, social activist, and author. His virtual keynote will be available to watch beginning Thursday, March 6th, 2025.
Dana Tanamachi – Dana is a world-renowned artist who is best known for her 3 story mural at Starbucks inside the Empire State Building in New York City, NY. You can hear her online, or in-person on Friday, March 7th, 2025.
Tara Davis-Woodhall and Hunter Woodhall – Tara is an Olympic Gold Medalist and her husband, Hunter is a Paralympic Gold Medalist. They are sharing their story in person or virtually on Saturday, March 8th, 2025.

Do I have to attend RootsTech in person?
No! This is one of the very best things about this family history event! You can register to attend using a free virtual ticket or you can purchase a ticket to attend in person! The general sessions and Family Discovery Day are available in multiple languages. The RootsTech website is available in 23 languages. They make it super easy for everyone to have the opportunity to be part of the RootsTech event!

Is RootsTech a family event?
RootsTech is a great place to get started on your genealogy research and you can have family members join you! If you are attending in person, we would suggest having older children come, as it may be overwhelming for younger kids. On Saturday, they have an amazing free event for the whole family called Family Discovery Day! It’s a part of RootsTech that is geared toward involving the whole family in genealogy and family history. Our families have LOVED going to it each year!
They also have “Relatives at RootsTech”, which can help you connect with any of your cousins that might be at RootsTech too!
Do I have to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to attend RootsTech?
Not at all! RootsTech is truly for EVERYONE! RootsTech offers so many classes that can help anyone who is wanting to expand their knowledge on family history, how to find and preserve family tree information, and even genetic genealogy! Because of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints commitment to family history, you many find a lot of members know about and attend the conference. However, you will find people from all backgrounds and belief systems from all over the world that love and attend RootsTech!
What type of classes are at RootsTech?
Because of RootsTech’s commitment to connecting people and families from all over the world, they offer a wide range of classes to help attendees discover new information about their family history. On the website, you can filter the classes by levels from Beginner to Advanced/Professional. Classes range from the very basics of getting started with genealogy, to understanding your genetic genealogy. With hundreds of classes available, you will find something to help you on your family history journey.
There are even classes that focus on specific countries and how to use their census records to find family history information. It’s honestly hard to find an area of family history that is not covered each year at RootsTech!

What is the Expo Hall at RootsTech?
The RootsTech Expo Hall is something we look forward to seeing every year! There are always so many amazing booths that can help you discover more about your genealogy and family. You’ll find vendors that can help you document and preserve your family stories, learn about your DNA results, and help you learn how to use online research to make more family connections.
There are also genealogical groups that come to connect with other conference attendees that may have similar backgrounds to expand their global family.
Also, because the days can get long with so much amazing information to take in, there are even onsite food vendors to make sure you can grab a bite to eat in between classes and general sessions.
Why should I go to RootsTech?
Honestly, because it’s such an amazing experience to be part of the largest genealogy conferences in the world. Whether you are attending online or in person, you are going to learn so much and be so inspired by the stories and insights shared. Not only is it a place to learn, but it’s a way to connect and feel close to your ancestors in a way that you never imagined. There are so many ways to discover even more about your family than you thought possible.
