Every year Nate and I try to come up with ways to help us and our children focus on the true meaning of Christmas. We have some traditions we do from year to year (sub for Santa, donating gloves, hats, scarves, blankets to homeless shelters, doing things for our friends and neighbors) that we love doing but some years we still get caught up in the craziness of making sure our children have *the perfect* Christmas that even we as the adults can forget why we celebrate at this time of year.
I am so excited for the #LIGHTtheWORLD project. It doesn’t matter who you are, how much money you have, what church you go to, or even who you voted for, we can all make the world a better place by serving others.
If like us you’re looking for ideas to bring the spirit of service and giving into your home this holiday season here is an awesome calendar to help (we’re using this as our advent calendar this year and I’m so excited).
You can download this calendar here.
To kick off the 25 days of #LIGHTtheWORLD December 1st is a Worldwide day of service. This works out pretty wonderfully for us because today also kicks off Silver Rush for our community. Our Riverton High School every year chooses a charity to raise money for and the students become involved in ways that would make your heart swell with pride. These kids have raised well over $100,000 in just a few weeks each the last few years. This year they are raising money for Millie’s Princess Foundation. Millie’s Princess Foundation is dedicated to providing financial support and hope to families affected by childhood cancer, as well as raising awareness about the devastating effects of this disease.
If you live in Riverton make sure you download the Silver Rush App so you can stay involved in what these kids are doing and where they’ll be and you can support them. By supporting them you are supporting this wonderful foundation.
There are so many ways we can serve and they don’t have to be huge and they don’t even have to leave the walls of our own homes.
I hope you’ll take the #LIGHTtheWORLD challenge and I hope you’ll share with us your ideas to serve others.
If you’re not local to Riverton (or, even if you are) and are looking for opportunities to serve in your community you can visit JustServe, there you can put in your zipcode and be directed to opportunities in your area. You can also always check out your local homeless shelters and food banks.
