How to Make a Yarn Pom Pom
Can you tell yet I had way too much fun with my yarn party? I love the look of the yarn pom pom, it is so simple to make you’ll probably be surprised. There are a variety of ways you can easily and successfully make a yarn pom pom. For this party I wanted them all a pretty consistent size, I used them on the top of little sticks inside cute jars and I think they look just like truffula trees! I also used them along with a long bendy/twisty branch laid out on the center of the table. I love that this added a lot of texture to the look of the table and took up space there in the center. The great thing about these cute puff balls, I bet your 5 year old could do them for you. I sat and did them while watching TV and it took about 15 minutes to make all of them.
The yarn pom pom looks great done with the multi-colored yarn, you get a variety of looks without having to buy a lot of yarn.
To make all of these the size they are I used a large fork (serving fork with 4 tines) and kept the wrapping to the base of the fork so all the pieces would end up the same length. The length of yarn you use will determine the overall fullness of the yarn pom pom but will not determine the overall size, the size will be determined by what you wrap it around.
For a quick video instruction you can skip to the 4:54 mark on the video and see exactly what I’m talking about with creating the yarn pom pom this way. My daughter did the same thing but instead of using a fork she used 4 fingers on her left hand, she put the tie piece between her middle and ring finger and then just wrapped it around her fingers and got the exact same look just a little larger. When doing the yarn pom pom this way there will be a little trimming involved if you want it to be a perfect looking little ball like mine, but with a nice sharp pair of scissors it is very easy.
Another way to make the yarn pom pom is exactly how I made the Tulle Pom Poms when I was on Studio 5 last month. This way gives you the option to go really big with the yarn pom pom and would be so much fun as well. {Video is included in the Tulle Pom Pom post to show you how I did those as well!).
This party was so much fun, I have a few more things to show you coming up so I hope you’ll be back to see how I made the yarn orbs and the yarn tassels.
