Sometimes finding the right gift for a the mothers in your life can be hard. We’ve come up with a fun and easy Mother’s Day tag with Cricut. Using Design Space, it was easy to make a little Mother’s Day gift.
I don’t know about where you live but here in Utah, drive through soda shops are huge! We love frequenting our favorites and getting some delicious, flavored sodas. Everyone makes their “dirty” drinks a little different. For me, I like some coconut syrup and fresh lime in my Coke. If my husband is making a late night run for a soda, I have him make one for me. The man is a natural! Seriously, I don’t know how he does it, but it’s perfect tasting every time. So I asked him, his exact words were “I add coconut syrup and lime until I can’t stand the smell of it.” Sooooo…at least he has a system down! Because these drinks are so popular here, we decided to put together a little Mother’s Day gift basket with everything you need to make a delicious “dirty” drink at home.
All you need to put this together is:
20 oz Coke and Diet Coke bottles
1 bottle coconut syrup
3-4 limes
basket
tissue paper
Now we’re going to pull out the Cricut and get our cute tag made. I have to be honest, when I first started using a Cricut, I was really intimidated by Design Space. Design Space (DS) is the software you use to create your projects. It’s loaded with premade projects, tons of images and fonts and is surprisingly easy to use.
First you are going to want to open DS. Then click on new project. That will take you to the canvas, which looks similar to your cutting mat. For this project we are going to use available images from DS. I searched “circle” and found a solid circle that I could have my message written on in the middle. The next circle I found had a cut out middle and scalloped edge that I could do in another color. Insert your images and adjust your sizes. I made my solid circle 5′ and my outside scallop at 5.4″.
Then I added my text, for this I used “I’m soda-lighted you’re my mom”. Arrange your wording and then go over to the sidebar and change the wording from cut to write. You can choose the color and size of the pen you are using. When you select different colors, while the machine is writing it will prompt you to change your pen.
Once you have your text set, highlight the whole image and click on attach. This will make your whole image one, solid image. If you want to make more than one, click on duplicate and it will duplicate the whole image and settings. Click on Make It, to move on to write and cut.
The next screen will show you your project as it would look on the cutting mat. Make sure everything is correct and then hit continue. That will show you what your material cut is, and what machine you are connected to. Once that is all set, hit Go and follow the instructions to load your mat and begin your write and cut.
I know it might sound difficult, but it’s actually very easy. And if you run into any trouble, in addition to Cricut customer service there are tons of tips and tricks, video how to’s, and full tutorials online that should be able to answer all your questions.
Once my pieces were written and cut, I used a tape runner to stick the two pieces of my tag together. Using some curling ribbon, I tied the tag to the bottle of coconut syrup, arranged the bottles and limes in the basket, and it’s ready to go!
