So Jenn always laughs at me because when I get the Old Navy 4th of July shirts…I wear them long past the 4th and long past the year that they were intended for. I guess I never saw as a problem…a shirt is a shirt is a shirt to me. 🙂 This year I decided it would be fun to make our own flag shirts. So not only do we get a cute Handprint Flag Shirt, but we get a fun memory at the same time!
Here is what you’ll need…
White Tshirts in the sizes you need
Red fabric paint
Blue fabric paint
Sponge paint brushes
You will want to put a piece of cardboard between the two layers of shirts so the paint won’t seep through to the back side. Make sure the front of your shirt is straight with no folds in the fabric. Using a sponge paint brush, brush the blue paint on to your little one’s hand. I’ve found this helps get an even coat on their hands without the paint getting all goopy. If you have very little ones, you’re probably going to want to have two people. For my almost 17 month old daughter, my husband held the shirt straight while I held her hand to make sure we got it mostly in the right place. The nice thing about these is that they don’t have to be perfect! 🙂 Let the blue hand print dry, and then using another sponge brush and the red paint, make your stripes. I didn’t want our stripes to look totally uniform. Make sure you let the paint totally dry before moving the shirt around, you don’t want a bunch of paint marks where they aren’t supposed to be.
And there you have it. Custom 4th of July shirts made by your own family! It’s an easy and fun 4th of July project to do with your kids! My kids were BEGGING to get to wear their shirts every day. They loved being a part of the creation process!
