With the school year in full swing, you would think our household had gotten into a great groove. Well let me just say that’s not totally true. While some mornings seem to go fantastic, other mornings…I need a nap by the time I get everyone out the door.
One thing that makes the morning go smoothly is having a good breakfast ready for everyone so we can get that out of the way first. Of course a good 50% of the time we have cold cereal. My boys LOVE it, but I feel terrible if they eat it all the time so we mix it up a little. Another thing they love as the weather gets colder is oatmeal. After going through one box of instant oatmeal in just one morning, I thought I should just make up some packets myself. (Why do they make the serving sizes so small?) My husband has done this before for backpacking trips and I figured it would be easy to put together.
It was incredibly simple and a great time and money saver. I put together 20 packets for the same price as a box of 10 packets of generic instant oatmeal that you can buy at the store! I should also say that my packets are double the size of the store bought kind.
Here’s what you’ll need per packet…
1 snack size ziplock
2/3 cup 1 minute oats
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 pinch of nutmeg
Combine all ingredients into the snack size ziplock, push out as much air as you can and seal. I used a 64 oz canister of 1 minute oats and it made 20 packets. You can adjust this recipe to what suits your tastes. More brown sugar or less…more cinnamon or less. ๐ I wanted to make ours pretty simple and then I let the boys pick “add ins”. Chopped apples, raisins, craisins, banana slices, etc. They love being able to customize their oatmeal pretty easily!
When we make each packet we generally use between 3/4 to 1 cup of water. R likes his thinner…more water. C and H like theirs thicker…less water. Pop it in the microwave in a microwave safe bowl for 40 seconds, stir and put back in for another 30 seconds. There you have it! Enjoy!

Yes! I totally need to do this. Thank you for the reminder! The plague has hit our household, and this would be a perfect time for some hot oatmeal ๐
Anything that makes mornings smoother and WARMER is always a plus! Hope you all start feeling better soon!
