We have been in a few stores this summer that have had this moon sand out on display for children to play with and my kids beg me to buy it for them every single time. Some of the bags and kits I’ve seen can cost anywhere from $18.00-$25.00. We decided to make our own and we were happy with the result!
To make this you will need:
8 cups of flour
1 cup of baby oil ( can also use olive oil or vegetable oil)
plastic container with lid
In a large bowl combine 8 cups of flour and 1 cup of baby oil and mix together. I used a wire whisk for this and I thought it worked great!
After I mixed it with the whisk I used my hands to mix it up more and it started to form together like this. I’m pretty sure I mixed it up much longer than I needed to but it was so velvety soft and my hands smelled so good after I was done.
I added a little more baby oil to my mixture because I thought it was a little dry. You’ll know when you’ve added enough and everything is mixed well when it looks and forms together like this. It molds just like beach sand but feels like velvet.
I had my girls grab their plastic bins from their toy organizer so I could divide the moon sand up equally.
This way they all had the same amount to play with because it’s all about being fair at our house. 🙂 They used blocks, cups and any toy they could find that had a cool shape. The possibilities are endless to what you can do with this. You could add food coloring to make it a fun bright color. I had my kids go outside because it did get a little messy but they were happy to be outside on a nice summer night and it kept them busy for hours. The best thing about this moon sand is after your children are done playing with it just dump it back in the plastic container and put the lid on it and it’s all ready to go for next time! I just put it on my pantry shelf so it’s easy for my kids to grab. So when your children come up to you this summer and say I’m bored you can tell them you have the perfect solution for that!
